Michael Fried: Modernism Blazing

“‘What is at stake’, Fried writes, ‘is whether [the artworks] in question are experienced as paintings or as objects’. Whether, that is, the paintings are made objects or their object-status made vulnerable to vision, capable of yielding insight, of being pressed into by motivated perception and pressing back in turn, challenging, informing, moving the perceiver. This was genuine connection, a source of ‘non-theatrical’ or uncontrived expression and emotion.”

In a 1998 article in Frieze Magazine Lane Relyea assesses the criticism of Michael Fried.
