Abstract Critical

Barry Schwabsky on Abstract Art Now

Barry Schwabsky at the first abstract critical panel discussion, on the time-limit of the knowingly futile project. He asks, can one continue to work with the idea of the abstract, without repeating ideas which have been proved to be unsolvable?

I like Greengerg, actually Andy (amazingly there seems to be a spellcheck operating within AC’s comments box – Props AC!). But the typo summons up the man’s addled thinking frankly.

“Good landscapes, portraits and torsos will still be turned out” sounds a lot like a criticism to me, the term ‘turned out’ suggesting production almost by by rote of work that is no longer relevant. Now that abstraction is no longer the dominant force it once was and I wonder if today’s Greengerg might say “there will always be a place for abstraction, non representational work will still be turned out…”
