Enjoyed stumbling upon and reading this article. I took your Abstract Expressionism class at York U, and it remains one of my fave to this day. Just recently got into Clyfford Still’s work, and I am struck by his palette, as it is something I have pondered over for my own art work. You make mention of his referencing Native American art – I would hazard a guess that his palette, consisting largely of red/black/white/yellow, is a tip of the hat to the Native American archetypal colors used in their mythology, representing the four directions: north, east, south, west.

I said “He just didnt work on them long enough” Clem said no no but I forget what Clems reason was…

I want to assure Patrick Jones that my disappointment with Still’s later, more open work in no way diminishes my admiration for the best stuff, which influenced me no end. It is so powerful.”Hard to get”,indeed!- I am still working on it.

I find him heavy handed and too much on the surface of his paintings; even the white paintings or the paintings left with unpainted areas.
